Rajasthan Govt's 'Netra Janch Abhiyan': Free Spectacles for School Children

Rajasthan Govt's 'Netra Janch Abhiyan': Free Spectacles for School Children

Rajasthan Government's 'Netra Janch Abhiyan': A Unique Initiative for Government School Children

Both education and health are the foundation of development for any society. If a child is not physically completely healthy, it directly impacts their education and learning capacity. Keeping this in mind, the Medical and Health Department of the Government of Rajasthan has started a highly commendable and important initiative for children studying in government schools. The name of this initiative is 'Netra Janch Abhiyan' (Eye Screening Campaign).

Under this campaign, special eye check-ups will be conducted for students studying in government schools across the state. During the screening, children found to have weak eyesight will be distributed free spectacles by the government. Launched on the instructions of Rajasthan's Medical and Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar and Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, the main objective of this campaign is to ensure that no child's education is affected due to a lack of funds or awareness.

Principal Government Secretary of the Medical and Health Department, Gayatri Rathore, stated that this campaign will prove to be a milestone in building a better future for children. This year, the department has set a major target of providing free spectacles to approximately 75,000 needy students.

Good Eyesight, Better Education: What is the Main Objective of this Campaign?

"Good eyesight, better education" — this is not just a slogan, but a harsh reality. It is often observed that many children cannot properly read the letters written on the blackboard in class or face difficulty reading the small print in books. Many times, children themselves do not realize that their vision is weak, and they start complaining of headaches or eye fatigue. Gradually, this directly impacts their studies, and they begin to lag behind other children in class.

The main objectives of this campaign are as follows:

  • Identifying children with weak vision: Timely identification of government school children suffering from refractive errors (such as myopia or hypermetropia).
  • Providing free spectacles: Providing spectacles free of cost to the identified needy and economically weaker children.
  • Improving academic performance: Enhancing children's learning capacity and school performance by correcting their vision.
  • Health awareness: Raising awareness among children, parents, and teachers about regular eye check-ups and care.

This Year's Target and Last Year's Success: A Comparative Analysis

This eye screening campaign by the Rajasthan government is not a new experiment, but the next phase of the spectacular success achieved last year. According to Principal Government Secretary Gayatri Rathore, through the special efforts of the state government last year as well, millions of children were screened, out of which free spectacles were distributed to more than 71,000 children.

This year, the government has resolved to increase this figure further and reach approximately 75,000 children. The table below provides a clear comparative detail of last year's results and this year's targets:

Campaign Methodology: How Will the Children's Eyes Be Screened?

To make this campaign completely successful at the grassroots level, strong coordination has been established between the Medical and Health Department and the Education Department. The entire process has been designed in a highly systematic manner so that no needy child is left deprived of the benefits of this scheme.

The main phases of the effective implementation of this campaign are as follows:

1. Shala Darpan Data and the Role of Teachers

First of all, at the school level, teachers will conduct preliminary screening based on student data available on the Shala Darpan portal. Teachers will identify children in their classes who face difficulty seeing the blackboard or reading.

2. Screening by RBSK Teams

In coordination with Block Medical and Health Officers and Block Education Officers, RBSK (Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram) teams are being sent to government schools. These teams will visit schools to conduct primary eye screening of the identified children.

3. Specialist Examination at CHC Level

Children found to have serious vision-related issues during the primary screening will be referred to the nearest Community Health Centre (CHC) for further examination. Precise and scientific eye examinations of these children will be conducted by Ophthalmic Assistants working at 382 CHCs across the state.

4. Free Spectacles Distribution

Mission Director of National Health Mission (NHM) Dr. Jogaram has issued clear instructions that no student coming to the CHC level should be sent back without an examination. Immediately after the check-up, children who require spectacles will be provided custom-made glasses absolutely free of cost.

Impact of Weak Eyesight on Studies: Why Do Students Need This?

"Education is not just about memorizing books, but it is a perspective to see and understand the world. If children's perspective—that is, their vision—is blurry, how will they fully absorb the light of knowledge?"

Weak eyesight has a direct impact on children's mental health and self-confidence. When a child cannot clearly see the letters written on the blackboard in class, they gradually fall prey to an inferiority complex. They feel they are weaker compared to other children, whereas the real problem lies not in their intellect but in their eyes.

Time eye check-ups and getting spectacles provide the following benefits to children:

  • Increase in concentration: Once they can see letters clearly, children can focus on their studies for longer periods.
  • Relief from headaches and fatigue: Children get relief from headaches and physical fatigue caused by straining their eyes to see blurry images.
  • Boost in self-confidence: When children can actively participate in every classroom activity, their lost self-confidence returns.

Important Eye Care Tips for Students

In today's digital age, where a major part of education has become dependent on online classes and screen reading, taking extra care of your eyes is extremely important. Whether you are a school student or preparing for competitive exams, keeping your eyes healthy is essential for your success. At Patamde Study, we always prioritize the holistic development and health of students.

To keep their eyes healthy, students can adopt these simple and effective tips:

  • Adopt the 20-20-20 rule: While continuously looking at a screen or studying, every 20 minutes, look at an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This relaxes the eye muscles.
  • Study in proper lighting: Never study in low light or direct sunlight. While studying, the light should always come from behind or from the side so that it does not glare directly into your eyes.
  • Eat a balanced diet: Include foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E in your daily diet, such as carrots, green leafy vegetables, papaya, milk, and dry fruits.
  • Get adequate sleep: At least 7 to 8 hours of deep sleep is essential to recharge both the brain and the eyes.
  • Wash your eyes at regular intervals: Splash cold water on your eyes in between study sessions. This helps relieve dry eyes.

Conclusion: Healthy Eyes, Prosperous Future

This 'Netra Janch Abhiyan' of the Rajasthan government is not just a health program, but it is laying the foundation for a bright future for thousands of children in the state. Only when every child in the country studies with clear vision will our society and nation progress on the path of development. The benefits of this commendable initiative of the government must reach every needy child. For this, teachers, parents, and every citizen of society need to be aware.

If you also know any government school student who is facing difficulty in seeing, contact their school teachers immediately so that their eyes can be screened under this campaign.
