RRB NTPC Graduate Recruitment 2026: Major Changes, No Typing Test, and Reduced Vacancies

Introduction: Major Changes in Railway Recruitment 2026

The new notification for the graduate-level Non-Technical Popular Categories (RRB NTPC Graduate Recruitment 2026) released by the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has created a huge buzz among candidates across the country. This time, Railway Recruitment 2026 has not only seen a massive change in the number of vacancies but has also introduced several important and historic policy changes in the selection process. The biggest change is that the Typing Skill Test has been completely removed from the selection process this time. In addition, the popular posts of Station Master and Traffic Assistant have also been excluded from this year's main graduate-level notification.

If you are also planning to apply for this recruitment, it is extremely important for you to understand these changes in detail. Preparing without knowing about the reduction in the number of posts and the new rules of the selection process could prove disadvantageous for you. In this article, we will discuss all these major changes, the new classification of posts, the exam pattern, and the right preparation strategy in detail.

RRB NTPC 2026 Graduate Recruitment: A Glance at the Key Changes

This year's Railway Graduate Level Recruitment (CEN 06/2026) is quite different compared to previous years. According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Railways, some major decisions have been taken this time to make the recruitment process more transparent, simple, and fast. These changes have completely altered the equation of the entire exam.

Here are the key changes in this recruitment:

  • Massive reduction in the number of posts: This time, there has been a major cut in the total number of notified posts. The number of vacancies has decreased significantly compared to the previous recruitment.
  • Discontinuation of Computer-Based Typing Test: The Computer-Based Typing Skill Test (CBTST), which was previously conducted for posts like Junior Accounts Assistant and Senior Clerk, will no longer be a part of the selection process.
  • Station Master and Traffic Assistant excluded: The posts of Station Master and Traffic Assistant have not been included in this year's graduate-level NTPC recruitment.
  • Recruitment in only four categories: Applications have now been invited for only four major posts under this notification.

What Will Be the Impact of Removing the Typing Test?

The Railway Recruitment Board's decision that there will be no separate Computer-Based Typing Skill Test for the posts of Junior Accounts Assistant-cum-Typist and Senior Clerk-cum-Typist this time is a huge relief for candidates. Previously, even after passing the written exam, candidates remained anxious about the typing test.

Important Fact: According to the official notification issued by the Ministry of Railways, candidates will no longer need to pass the typing test at the time of selection. Instead, the typing efficiency of the candidates will be assessed after final selection and appointment.

The following impacts of this major change will be observed:

  • Complete focus on the written exam: Candidates will now have the opportunity to focus solely on the CBT 1 and CBT 2 exams without worrying about typing speed.
  • Faster recruitment process: The extra time and resources spent on organizing the typing test will be saved, which is expected to lead to the early release of the final merit list and appointment letters.
  • Possibility of higher cut-offs: Since selection will now be based solely on written exam marks, the written exam cut-off is likely to be higher than before. Candidates will have to work hard to score maximum marks in the exam.

Major Reduction in Vacancies: A Comparative Analysis

The reduction in the number of vacancies in the railway recruitment this time has made the competition quite tough. According to newspapers published from Ajmer and the official notification, there has been a major decrease of 2,262 posts in the total number of vacancies this time. Let's understand the vacancy breakdown of this recruitment compared to the previous one through a table:

Post NamePrevious Recruitment (Posts)This Recruitment (CEN 06/2026)Difference (Decreased Posts)
Total Graduate Posts5,8103,548-2,262
Goods Train Manager-2,750-
Senior Clerk Cum Typist-371-
Junior Accounts Assistant Cum Typist-300-
Chief Commercial-cum-Ticket Supervisor (CCTS)-127-

It is clear from this table that the highest number of posts this time is for Goods Train Manager, with a count of 2,750. On the other hand, the lowest number of posts is for Chief Commercial-cum-Ticket Supervisor, with only 127 vacancies. Due to this massive reduction in posts, candidates will have to choose their respective RRB Zone and Post Preferences very wisely.

Recruitment Will Now Be Held for Only Four Categories

As discussed above, graduate-level candidates are being recruited for only four categories this time. The details of these posts, their job profile, and their initial Basic Pay are as follows:

1. Chief Commercial Cum Ticket Supervisor (CCTS)

  • Pay Level: Level 6 (as per the 7th Pay Commission)
  • Initial Basic Pay: ₹35,400 per month
  • Total Posts: 127
  • Job Profile: Their primary job is to supervise commercial activities related to ticket booking, parcels, and freight handling at railway stations.

2. Goods Train Manager (GTM)

  • Pay Level: Level 5
  • Initial Basic Pay: ₹29,200 per month
  • Total Posts: 2,750 (the largest share of this recruitment)
  • Job Profile: They were previously known as 'Goods Guards'. Their job is to ensure the safe operation of goods trains and manage the train during transit.

3. Junior Accounts Assistant Cum Typist (JAA)

  • Pay Level: Level 5
  • Initial Basic Pay: ₹29,200 per month
  • Total Posts: 300
  • Job Profile: They primarily work in the finance and accounts departments of the railways. Their job involves maintaining accounts and processing bills.

4. Senior Clerk Cum Typist

  • Pay Level: Level 5
  • Initial Basic Pay: ₹29,200 per month
  • Total Posts: 371
  • Job Profile: Their job involves handling clerical and administrative tasks in various railway offices, maintaining files, and performing data entry.

Reason for Excluding Station Master and Traffic Assistant Recruitment

Many candidates are confused as to why the posts of Station Master and Traffic Assistant have been excluded from this notification. According to Railway Board sources, the selection process for the post of Station Master requires a Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT / Psycho Test) and specific medical standards (especially the A2 medical standard).

The selection process and training modules for these posts are significantly different from other non-technical posts. Therefore, the railway administration has decided that a separate recruitment notification will be issued for Station Master posts. This will prevent any delay in the recruitment process of general graduate posts and will also allow the selection process for Station Master to be completed in a more streamlined manner.

Important Dates and New Preparation Strategy

If you are eligible for this recruitment (a graduate degree from any recognized university), you should apply as soon as possible without waiting for the last date.

Here are some important dates related to this recruitment:

  • Application Start Date: October 8, 2026
  • Last Date to Apply: November 6, 2026 (until 11:59 PM)
  • Last Date for Application Fee Payment: November 8, 2026
  • Application Modification Window: November 9 to November 18, 2026
  • Tentative Date for First Stage Exam (CBT 1): Fourth week of December 2026

Exam Pattern and Preparation Tips

Since the typing test and psycho test have been removed from the selection process this time, the entire competition now hinges solely on the written exams of CBT 1 and CBT 2. To achieve success in this new scenario, you should make the following changes to your strategy:

  • 100% focus on the written exam: Now you do not have to worry about typing at all. Devote your entire time to strengthening Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, and General Awareness.
  • Regular mock tests: Since the competition is going to be very tough, start taking mock tests regularly to improve your speed and accuracy.
  • Identify weak subjects: The CBT 1 exam is proposed for the last week of December, so you have very limited time. Solve previous years' question papers (PYQs) and identify your weak areas to work on them.

To give your preparation the right direction and adapt yourself to the latest exam pattern, you can take the help of Patamde mock tests and study material, where you will find the best mock test series and excellent study material.

Make sure you fill out your form in time and give a new direction to your preparation starting today.
