The Central Government has brought great news for millions of youth across the country dreaming of a career in the Indian Army (Indian Army) and for current Agniveers (Agniveers). In a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 4, 2026, a historic and highly significant amendment to the Agnipath Scheme was approved. Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General N.S. Raja Subramani (General N.S. Raja Subramani) announced during a press conference that the service period of Agniveers can now be extended by 2 years. This means that Agniveers who were set to leave the military after completing 4 years of service can now serve the nation for a total of 6 years.
This major decision is set to prove a game-changer for the country's youth in terms of Govt Jobs and Career News. Welcoming the decision, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also described it as a major step toward making the Indian Army more youthful, fit, and technologically capable. This change will not only boost the morale of the soldiers but will also ensure that the defence forces continue to get experienced and trained personnel.
Under this new amendment approved by the Cabinet, a provision for a 'Second Tour of Duty' has been added to the Agnipath Scheme. Its key points are as follows:
Key Point: This service extension is a golden opportunity for all those Agniveers who want to build a permanent career in the Indian Army. Now, they will not be discharged directly after 4 years; instead, they will get another excellent opportunity to become permanent based on their performance.
The first batch of Agniveers recruited under the Agnipath Scheme, launched in the year 2022, was set to complete its 4-year service period in December 2026. According to government data, approximately 24,400 youth were inducted into the Army, Navy, and Air Force in the first batch.
While 25% of them (around 6,100 Agniveers) are being made permanent based on merit, the remaining 75%, i.e., more than 18,300 Agniveers, were scheduled to be discharged this December. This new decision by the Central Government will directly benefit these 18,300+ youth. They can now extend their service by another 2 years without any interruption, and during this period, they will also be given an increased monthly pay (Increased Monthly Pay).
In this press conference, CDS General N.S. Raja Subramani did not just announce the extension of the service period, but also shared information about a major change in the recruitment process for youth preparing for Defense Exams.
The stages of the Agniveer recruitment exam have now been completely streamlined. Under the new rules:
The main objective of this change is to ensure that youth who are not only physically strong but also mentally capable and technologically aware are selected to defend the country's borders.
To better understand these changes in Agniveer recruitment and service conditions, refer to the table below:
| Parameter / Rule | Old Rule (2022) | New Amended Rule (2026) |

| Total Service (Total Service) | Maximum 4 years | Maximum 6 years (for interested candidates) |
